A tilt table test is a diagnostic procedure used to evaluate the causes of unexplained fainting (syncope), dizziness, or lightheadedness by monitoring how the body responds to changes in position. During the test, the patient is strapped to a table that tilts them from a lying to a standing position, while heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels are continuously monitored. The goal is to determine if changes in posture cause an abnormal response in heart rate or blood pressure, which could indicate conditions such as vasovagal syncope, orthostatic hypotension, or other autonomic nervous system disorders. The cause of these conditions often involves a malfunction in the body's ability to regulate blood pressure and heart rate, leading to insufficient blood flow to the brain when standing, which can result in fainting or dizziness. Complications of the tilt table test are rare but can include prolonged hypotension, bradycardia (slow heart rate), or fainting during the test, which may cause discomfort or anxiety.
