Fundectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the fundus, the upper portion of the stomach. This part of the stomach is responsible for storing food and releasing gases produced during digestion. Fundectomy is typically performed as part of a larger surgical treatment for various gastrointestinal conditions, such as gastric cancer, severe ulcers, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) when conservative treatments fail. It can also be part of a bariatric (weight-loss) surgery, such as sleeve gastrectomy, where a portion of the stomach, including the fundus, is removed to reduce the stomach's capacity and promote weight loss. The procedure is often performed laparoscopically, using small incisions and specialized instruments, which reduces recovery time and minimizes scarring. In cases of cancer, the fundectomy may be part of a more extensive surgery to remove cancerous tissues and nearby lymph nodes to prevent the spread of disease. Complications of fundectomy can include infection, bleeding, and leakage from the surgical site, particularly at the connection between the remaining parts of the stomach and the intestines. Postoperative issues may also include changes in digestion, such as dumping syndrome, where food moves too quickly from the stomach to the intestines, causing nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Additionally, patients may experience acid reflux, reduced stomach capacity, and difficulty absorbing nutrients. Despite these risks, fundectomy is often a necessary intervention for treating serious stomach conditions and can improve symptoms and quality of life when other treatments are not effective.
