Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure aimed at restoring the shape, appearance, and symmetry of the breast following mastectomy or lumpectomy, commonly due to breast cancer treatment. This procedure can involve the use of breast implants (saline or silicone) or autologous tissue, where tissue is taken from another part of the patient's body, such as the abdomen or back, to rebuild the breast. Reconstruction can be done immediately after a mastectomy or delayed until after cancer treatment is completed. It helps restore a woman's body image and can improve emotional and psychological well-being. The primary reason for breast reconstruction is to rebuild the breast mound after its removal due to cancer, trauma, or congenital deformities. It provides a sense of normalcy for women who have undergone surgery as part of cancer treatment. Some women opt for reconstruction to avoid wearing external prosthetics, while others seek to restore body symmetry, especially if only one breast has been affected. Complications of breast reconstruction can include infection, scarring, implant rupture or displacement, and tissue necrosis (death of tissue) in the case of autologous reconstruction. There is also a risk of poor wound healing, asymmetry, or complications related to anesthesia. Patients may require additional surgeries to achieve the desired aesthetic result. Despite these risks, breast reconstruction offers many women a chance to regain their sense of self after cancer treatment, providing both physical restoration and emotional recovery.
