The Blalock-Thomas-Taussig shunt (BT shunt) is a palliative surgical procedure used to improve blood flow to the lungs in children with congenital heart defects that result in cyanosis, such as tetralogy of Fallot or pulmonary atresia. This operation involves creating a connection between a systemic artery, typically the subclavian or innominate artery, and the pulmonary artery. By redirecting blood from the body's systemic circulation to the pulmonary artery, the BT shunt increases blood flow to the lungs, thereby improving oxygenation and alleviating cyanosis (a bluish tint to the skin due to low oxygen levels in the blood). The need for the Blalock-Thomas-Taussig shunt arises in cases where congenital heart defects cause inadequate pulmonary blood flow, leading to oxygen-poor blood being circulated throughout the body. These conditions can include tetralogy of Fallot, where a combination of structural heart defects limits the amount of blood reaching the lungs, or pulmonary atresia, where the pulmonary valve fails to develop properly, obstructing blood flow to the lungs.
